Scope and Content Cross-sectional drawings of the Bonnington and Stonebyres power stations on the Falls of Clyde Hydro-Electric Scheme The Falls of Clyde Scheme (sometimes called the New Lanark Scheme) celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2003. It was the first public hydro-electric scheme in Britain, and continues to operate, after a £1.43 million overhaul in 2003. This view shows drawings reproduced in a brochure about the scheme, and shows (top) the cross-section of one of the turbo-alternators at Stonebyres, The turbine is at the bottom of the central shaft, with the alternator and its exciter generator above it. The lower view is of the exterior of a set at Bonnington. There were two power stations in the Falls of Clyde scheme, the larger at Bonnington, above Lanark, and the smaller at Stonebyres, below that town. Both are still in use, though the equipment in them has been replaced. Later schemes in the Highlands and in Galloway were modelled on this one. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
