Scope and Content Harbour at Portmahomack, Ross and Cromarty, Highland Portmahomack is located on Tarbat Ness, a peninsula separating the Moray and Dornoch Firths on the east coast of Scotland. During the 19th century, a thriving herring fishing industry operated from the port. This aerial view shows part of the village and its harbour. The harbour comprises an L-shaped fishing pier (right) and a ramped ferry pier (left). Directly in front of the harbour, across the road, are two whitewashed buildings which were once warehouses. The warehouse on the left is probably 17th century in date, the other is 19th century. The first harbour pier was built in the late 17th century. The L-shaped east pier was constructed in 1813-16 by Thomas Telford (1757-1834). The shorter pier to the left was constructed in the 1860s as a ferry terminal. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
