Scope and Content Tummel/Garry Project, contract 16, Clunie Dam, interior of drum from right-hand end, 9 November 1949 Clunie Dam measures 21m high and 115m long. It is part of the Tummel Valley hydro-electric scheme which has a catchment area of over 1839 square km, and includes nine power stations and nine dams. The adjacent Clunie Power Station was commissioned in 1950, has an installed capacity of 15 megawatts and an average annual output of 55 million units of power. This view shows the interior of a steel drum gate in the Clunie Dam, one of two such gates in the finished dam. These gates can be tilted to allow water to flow out. There is a similar arrangement at the Pitlochry Dam. Note the riveted construction. The Tummel Valley scheme works on the cascade principle whereby as water flows from west to east through the valley (downhill) it passes through a series of dams and power stations. The water from Loch Tummel and Clunie Power Station flows on into Loch Faskally and feeds the combined power station and dam at Pitlochry. The scheme was one of eight built by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board during the 1940s to 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
