Scope and Content Strathfarrar Works Contract 101, Deanie Tunnel, intake bellmouth and gate tower, 4 September 1962 The Strathfarrar scheme is part of the Affric/Beauly Hydro-Electric Scheme constructed by the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board in an area to the north west of Inverness. This part of the scheme raised the level of Loch Monar, with water taken in a tunnel to an underground generating station at Deanie. This view shows the construction of the intake gate tower at Loch Monar. The openings will channel water from the raised loch into the tunnel leading to Deanie Power Station. Above the openings is part of the tower from which will be operated the sluices controlling the flow of water into the tunnel. The Strathfarrar scheme has four power stations, five dams and two lengthy tunnels. Great care was taken in its design and construction to minimise the impact on the fine highland scenery in the strath. The Affric/Beauly scheme is one of eight large schemes built by the Board from the 1940s to the 1960s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
