Scope and Content Base of turret post windmill, Holland Farm, Papa Westray, Orkney Post windmills survived in Orkney and Shetland longer than anywhere else in Scotland. The last windmill to work in the country was a turret post mill, in North Ronaldsay, and operated until about 1908. The remains of five of these mills survived in the 1980s. Shown is the base of a mill of this type at Holland Farm, in Papa Westray. The central post, on which a wooden superstructure revolved, is still in place. The superstructure carried the sails, and contained the millstones and gearing. This is the best-preserved structure of its type in Scotland. This mill was apparently used until the First World War. The superstructure was dismantled and used for firewood during the coal strike of 1926. Nearby there is a small flagstone-roofed granary. Note the absence of trees on this windswept island.
