Scope and Content Base of turret post windmill, Kirkhouse Point, South Ronaldsay, Orkney Post windmills survived in Orkney and Shetland longer than anywhere else in Scotland. The last windmill to work in the country was a turret post mill, in North Ronaldsay, and operated until about 1908. The remains of five of these mills survived in the 1980s. The image shows the base of a mill of this type at Kirkhouse Point, a natural harbour on South Ronaldsay. The masonry seen here supported a stout post, on which a wooden superstructure revolved. This carried the sails, and contained the millstones and gearing. This mill was described as 'Old Windmill' the time of the first Ordnance Survey in 1879. The ruins of the miller's house and granary still survive close to this structure. Its proximity to the shore, indicated by the boat in this view, suggests that the mill had a maritime trade.
