Scope and Content Hydro-electric power station, Dunecht Estate, Garlogie, Aberdeenshire The first water-powered installation on this site was a woollen mill, probably built in the early 19th century. This was demolished in 1934, probably at the time when the surviving hydro-electric power station was built to supply the Dunecht Estate of Lord Cowdray, a noted civil engineering contractor. This shows part of the interior of the power station, with on the left part of the spiral casing of the horizontal Francis turbine by Brown Boveri, a Swiss firm, which drove a generator out of sight to the left. The apparatus in the centre is for starting the turbine, and for governing its speed. This is a large and well-equipped private power station, built for a rich man anxious to improve his extensive estate. Smaller stations on the same principle were fairly common until mains electricity became generally available, when thy fell into disuse. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
