Scope and Content Aerial view of mills and village at Stanley, Perthshire Stanley was founded in 1785 by George Dempster, Richard Arkwright, inventor and industrialist, and a group of Perth merchants. Like New Lanark, founded in the same year, it was built as a model factory village. The mills were powered by seven giant waterwheels generating 400 horsepower. These were driven by water taken from the River Tay by 244 metres of piping. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
