Scope and Content John Wood's Hospital, Woodlaw Park, Upper Largo, Fife, from south This view from the south, taken in 1979, shows the building from the entrance, with its Tudor gate piers and original cast-iron gates. The Tudor style has also been adopted for the main range, with the simple College Chapel centrepiece containing the communal hall. This type of building was common in England, but comparatively rare in Scotland, where there was rarely sufficient individual wealth to endow such buildings, and where old people were usually looked after within the family. This building was constructed as an almshouse for 16 people, each having a sitting room and bedroom. The building has four units, each with its own door leading to four of the two-roomed apartments, and a central communal hall. It was designed in 1830 by James Leslie.
