Scope and Content Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from north-east The long wings at the north of the castle are known as the 'laigh biggins', or 'low buildings'. They date from the early 17th century and were built for the 1st Lord Fraser, Andrew Fraser (1574-1636). The east wing, shown in this photograph, contains the kitchen and dining room in the higher part of the structure, attached to the Round Tower. The 'laigh biggins' also contained servants' quarters, the brewhouse and bakehouse. Andrew Fraser was also responsible for giving the castle its distinctive appearance, adding the upper storeys to the original Z-plan tower-house. Work carried out during the 20th century has attempted to restore the castle to its 17th-century appearance. Castle Fraser, situated about 26km west of Aberdeen, has been owned by The National Trust for Scotland since 1976. The oldest parts of the castle date from the 15th and 16th century, added to over the centuries by generations of the Fraser family. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
