Scope and Content Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from north This photograph, taken in 1994, shows the castle as it appears from the north. This was the entrance front of the castle until around 1795 when a Classical entrance was constructed on the south side for Miss Elyza Fraser (1734-1814). The gatehouse at the front was one of the castle's latest additions, constructed in the late 18th or early 19th century to enclose the rectangular courtyard. On the central tower, immediately above the arched gate, a blocked entrance can be seen. This was the 16th-century entrance to the castle, reached via a wooden ladder that could be pulled inside during times of threat. In 1976, the castle was given to The National Trust for Scotland, and is now open to the public. A number of rooms can be visited in all parts of the castle, including the hall in the original castle, the 17th-century dining room and the 19th-century library. Castle Fraser was originally built in the 15th century as a single, rectangular tower-house. Over the centuries, generations of the Fraser family added to the original structure, creating a grand Renaissance castle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
