Scope and Content Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from west-south-west In this photograph, taken in 1994, five different building phases can be seen. The oldest part, dating from the 15th century, is the lower section of the large rectangular tower with exposed stonework. The harled towers on either side of it date from the 16th century, while all three towers were extended upwards during the 17th century. The 'laigh biggins', the lower wings at the left, also date from the 17th century, and the gatehouse (far left) was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. In 1976, the castle was given by the owners to The National Trust for Scotland, and it is now open to the public. One of the highlights is the vaulted great hall. Castle Fraser was first built in the 15th century and added to over the course of five centuries. Situated 26km west of Aberdeen, the castle was known as Muchall-in-Mar until 1695, as it lay on the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood, once part of the powerful earldom of Mar. King James II (1437-1460) granted the lands to Thomas Fraser in 1454. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
