Scope and Content Dormer window on Seton Tower, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph, taken in 1988, shows a detail of a dormer window in the Seton Tower, on the south façade of the castle. It is dated 1599, which is when Fyvie was owned by Alexander Seton (1555-1622). The carving on the dormer is a heraldic crest of the Seton family. Alexander Seton was made Chancellor of Scotland in 1601, and Earl of Dunfermline. He was responsible for substantial work on Fyvie Castle, notably the palace-like south façade, achieved by raising the walls, and creating a symmetrical appearance. Fyvie Castle was first built in the 13th century as a royal fortress. In 1380 the castle passed out of royal hands and was then owned successively by six families, who were all responsible for making important changes to the building. In 1984, ownership passed to The National Trust for Scotland, who, in 1986, began an extensive restoration. As the building was covered in scaffolding, this allowed photographers an opportunity to record details of previously inaccessible parts of the building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
