Scope and Content Carved cornice fragment, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph was taken in 1988. It shows carved cornice fragments that have been removed from the building, probably for conservation reasons. It is not clear what part of the castle the cornice came from, or how old it is. The carving takes the form of evenly-spaced flowers below a scroll. The restoration work gave photographers a valuable opportunity to record all parts of the building. As the castle was covered in scaffolding, the carvings on dormer windows and other similar details could be viewed at close quarters. Fyvie Castle is situated approximately 11km south of Turriff. The castle was first built as a royal fortress in the 13th century, and passed into private hands in 1380 when it was granted to Sir James Lindsay (d.1397). Six families successively held the castle until 1984, when it was purchased by The National Trust for Scotland. In 1986, The Trust began a long project of restoration, which lasted until 1993.
