Scope and Content Carved figure, Fyvie Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph shows a carved figure that had been temporarily removed from the castle. It stood on top of one of the bartizans (small round turrets) of Seton Tower, on the south front of the castle. The figure is carrying what appears to be a torch, which is appropriate as it overlooks one of the entrances to the castle. The restoration work on the castle gave photographers an opportunity to record many aspects of the building, like dormer windows and carved panels, that would have otherwise been inaccessible. Between 1986 and 1993, an extensive restoration project was carried out at Fyvie Castle, near Turriff. The castle had been purchased in 1984 by The National Trust for Scotland. It was first built in the 13th century as a royal fortress and was later owned successively by six families, all of whom made alterations or additions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
