Scope and Content Gravestone of Christian Hoor, St Munn's Church, Kilmun, Argyll & Bute This gravestone features a central shield bearing mill-wheels and 'moulines' (the metal brace which supports a millstone), the tools of the trade of a miller. At the top of the shield is a helmet surmounted by a sheaf of wheat, and surrounded by foliage, flowers and tassels. At the base of the stone is a hammer and crown, signifying that the deceased was a member of the Guild of Hammermen. Millers were often very wealthy members of the community, who were allowed to take a proportion of grain from every batch sent for grinding by villagers as their payment. The hammer at the base of this stone may signify that the deceased was also a 'pickieman', who re-cut the grinding surface of millstones. This gravestone commemorates Christian Hoor, who died in 1772. It is inscribed: 'Here lyes the remains of Christian/Hoor spouse to Miles Charmer/She died January 25th/1772'.
