Scope and Content Studio wing, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway, from south-west This photograph shows the studio and gallery wing which was built for Hornel in around 1910. It was designed by the architect John Keppie (1862-1945), and features tall Gothic windows, just seen at the end of the building, which overlook the garden and the River Dee. The gallery, the taller part of the wing behind the tree at the right of the photograph, was damaged in a fire in 1992. Luckily, there was little damage to the important collection of paintings and books which is held within the house, and which are now on display to the public, courtesy of The National Trust for Scotland, who now own the property. Broughton House was bought by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) in 1895. Hornel was one of the 'Glasgow Boys', a group of Scottish artists who flourished in the late 19th century. The house dates from the mid-18th century, when it was built as the town house for the Murrays of Broughton. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
