Scope and Content Ground-floor hall, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway, from west This room, on the ground floor of the house, contains panelling that dates from the 19th century. The black marble fireplace dates from around 1820. The room has been kept much as it was when the house was occupied by Hornel, and contains much of the antique furniture which the artist collected. Hornel ensured before his death that his house, library and garden would be made available to the public, especially local people. The library contains around 15,000 books, many with a local interest. There is also a Burns Collection, which includes the Kilmarnock Edition of 1786. Broughton House was built as a town house in the mid-18th century for the Murrays of Broughton. In 1895 it was purchased by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), where he lived until his death. The house is now a gallery and museum run by The National Trust for Scotland.
