Scope and Content Sampler display, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway Hornel lived at Broughton with his sisters, who looked after him and the house. This photograph shows the collection of samplers which his sisters gathered. The earliest dates from the reign of George III (1760-1820). The samplers were mounted in 1983, and comprise quite a large display on the staircase. Samplers were created by young women who were learning embroidery. They commonly included letters of the alphabet, family trees, quotations from the Bible and small pictures. Broughton House, built in the mid-18th century, was home from 1895 to Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), an artist and one of the 'Glasgow Boys'. The house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public as a museum, art gallery and library. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
