Scope and Content Gallery fireplace, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows the large fireplace in the gallery. It is of Jacobean Renaissance design, and reaches from floor to ceiling. The panel above the fire is engraved with children playing pipes. On either side of the fireplace, a plaster frieze can be seen. This is a replica of the Parthenon frieze and continues around the entire room. Hornel was a man of many interests, and had a library comprising some 15,000 volumes. He ensured that after his death, his garden, library and house be made available to local people. The house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. Broughton House is an 18th-century town house in Kirkcudbright. Built for the Murrays of Broughton, it was purchased in 1895 by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933). Hornel employed the architect John Keppie (1862-1945) to build an addition for a gallery and studio. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
