Scope and Content Studio, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows an exhibition in the studio, showing the 'Artist at Work'. Against the walls are some of the extensive library of books collected by Hornel. The books include a large collections of works on Galloway, and rare editions of the work of Robert Burns. Hornel was keen that local people should enjoy the library, gallery and gardens of Broughton. He made provisions before his death to ensure this, and the house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland and is open to the public. Broughton House was built in the mid-18th century as the town house for the Murrays of Kirkcudbright. In 1895 it was purchased by Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), an artist and one of the group of Scottish Impressionists known as the 'Glasgow Boys'. In around 1910, Hornel employed the architect John Keppie (1862-1945) to design a studio and gallery. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
