Scope and Content Japanese garden and pond, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph, taken in 2002, shows part of the garden which was laid out in an irregular, Japanese style. The pond is surrounded by a variety of water plants, with larger trees and bushes overhanging its edges. A statue of a crane also overlooks the water. Hornel undertook a number of trips to the Far East, which influenced both his painting and gardening. He brought many exotic plants back from visits to various countries including Japan, Burma and Ceylon (Sri Lanka). In 1895, the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) purchased Broughton House on Kirkcudbright High Street. The house is of mid-18th-century date, and Hornel was responsible for a number of additions, including the construction of a large studio and gallery. Hornel was also a keen gardener, and created a fine garden to the rear of the house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
