Scope and Content Interior view of greenhouse, Broughton House, Nos 10-12 High Street, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries & Galloway This photograph shows the interior of the restored Edwardian greenhouse, dating from between 1901 and 1910. The interior is filled with wooden benches and shelves, allowing plenty of growing space. Hornel brought back many exotic plants from trips to the Far East, and some would undoubtedly have been stored in here. Hornel's trips to Japan, Burma and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) did not only give him inspiration for his gardening, as he also depicted scenes and people from those countries in his works of art. The garden at the rear of Broughton House was designed and laid out between 1901 and 1930, when the house and garden were owned by the artist Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933), one of the 'Glasgow Boys', the group of Scottish Impressionist artists. The house and garden are now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and are open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
