Scope and Content Gravestone of John Grant, St Kessog's Church and Churchyard, Luss, Argyll & Bute This gravestone features a winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death) with a sad expression and a periwig, probably intended to be a portrait of the deceased. Below the soul is a shield filled with three crowns, probably emblems from a family crest. Leafy drapery, called 'mantling' surrounds the shield. In the panel below, next to a carving of a skull, is a draped reclining figure supporting itself on one arm whilst holding an hourglass. The lower panel of this gravestone shows the deceased in his shroud waiting for the Day of Judgement. The hourglass symbolises the brevity of life, whilst the skull acts as an emblem of death, suggesting that the scene takes place in a tomb. This gravestone commemorates John Grant, who died in 1738. It is inscribed: 'Here lyes the/Corps of John Grant/who dwelt in Dum/sine and died..../& is the Burying Place Appointed/for Christian McInlay his spouse/& there children'.
