Scope and Content Gravestone of William Mchutchon, St Kessog's Church and Churchyard, Luss, Argyll & Bute This stone features two flying Angels of the Resurrection, whose wings and heads cleverly create the shape of a leather cutting knife at the top of the stone. This is one of the trade emblems of a shoemaker, or cordiner. Below the souls is a shield divided into quarters, and flanked by scrolls. Scottish gravestones feature a wealth of imagery and symbolic devices which represent trade emblems, symbols of death and resurrection, and Biblical scenes. They offer a fascinating insight into how our ancestors saw themselves and how they wanted to be remembered, as well as providing a store of information for people interested in family or local history, and folk art. This gravestone commemorates William Mchutchon, who died in 1738. It is inscribed: 'Here Lyes the/Corps of William,/Mchutchon in Lus/And is the burying/place appointed for/Robert McHutchon his son/1738'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
