Scope and Content Aerial view of Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from north-west This aerial photograph shows the house and surrounding park. The formal gardens, some dating from the 19th century, can be seen stretching from the house towards the stables (centre right). The river is the White Cart Water, which has been canalised to the south of the house, probably by the 2nd Baronet at about the period when Pollok was constructed. The stable block is thought to incorporate parts of an earlier castle, one of the three predecessors to Pollok House that once stood on the estate. The walled gardens between the house and stables once included melon pits and a kitchen garden. There is now a demonstration garden within the walled area. Pollok House was built in the mid-18th century, on lands which had been held by the Maxwell family since the 13th century. The house is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and the grounds are a country park. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
