Scope and Content Aerial view of Hailes Castle, East Lothian This aerial view from the east, taken in 1978, shows the ruins of the castle, with the 13th-century tower and hall range in the foreground. Beyond the tower on the right is the 15th-century bakehouse and chapel block, with the ruined 14th-century tower at the far end. The curtain wall to the left of this tower also dates from the 14th century. The 14th-century west tower of the castle was still intact in the late 18th century, when the chapel had been converted into a granary. The 13th-century tower was converted into a dovecot. The complex subsequently fell into decay, and was given into State care in 1926 by the Earl of Balfour. It is now in the care of Historic Scotland and is open to the public. The first part of Hailes Castle was built in the 13th century, probably by the Earl of Dunbar and March. It was enlarged in the late 14th century, and again in the early 16th century by the Hepburn family. The castle passed through many hands. After the introduction of artillery it was of little defensive value. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
