Scope and Content Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in about 1890, shows the abbey church, with the remains of the nave on the left. The taller section, with the slab-roofed vault, is the part that was used as the parish church. On the right is the gable of the south transept, with a post-Reformation belfry at its apex. The south transept gable is one of the finest pieces of late Gothic architecture in Scotland, and was probably built to the designs of a French master mason, John Morow. The windows in the nave aisle lit a series of altars at which the monks said mass. Melrose Abbey was the first Cistercian abbey in Scotland, founded here in 1136 by King David I. Much of the abbey was destroyed in the 13th century, and it was rebuilt in a more elaborate manner between 1385 and the 16th century, though the west end of the church was never completed.
