Scope and Content Smailholm Tower, Scottish Borders, from south-west This view from the south-west, taken in the early 20th century, shows the tower on its rocky knoll. Note the sparsity of windows: this is a tower designed primarily as a refuge from attack. The walls to the left enclosed a courtyard, with the kitchen in the left corner. The rebuilding of the top floor was to convert the building into a beacon tower, to signal to Hume Castle, part of a network of such towers throughout the Borders. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) spent part of his childhood in the vicinity. The building was given into State care in 1950 by the Earl of Ellesmere. Now in the care of Historic Scotland it is open to the public. Smailholm Tower is situated on a rocky hill nearly 200m above sea level, and has extensive views. The tower was probably built in the early 16th century, and had a courtyard, or barmkin, attached to it, containing the kitchen and other buildings. The top storey was rebuilt, probably in the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
