Scope and Content Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from east This photograph shows the garden front of the house from the east. The core of the house was built in the mid-17th century, and later members of the family were responsible for further additions. The single-storeyed library wing was added in the late 19th century, and the pavilion in the foreground was built as part of a new garden scheme in the first years of the 20th century. The early 20th-century alterations to the gardens were made by the 10th Baronet, Sir John Stirling-Maxwell (1867-1956). In addition to overseeing the construction of terraces and pavilions, Sir John designed the formal parterres at either side of the house and established an important collection of rhododendrons. Pollok estate has been in the hands of the Maxwell family since the 13th century. The house and some of the grounds are now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland and are open to the public. The Burrell Collection, holding works of art collected by Sir William Burrell, is held in a modern gallery on the grounds. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
