Scope and Content Gun Room, Pollok House, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-east This photograph shows the gun room. Paintings of hunting scenes adorn the walls, and there is also a variety of stuffed animals on display. The rifles are kept in glass cabinets and gun cleaning equipment is laid out on the central table. A decanter and glasses are set on a table against the wall, perhaps in anticipation of a celebration on return from a successful hunting or fishing excursion. The gun room can be entered from outside, as well as from the basement corridor. This meant the men of the house could prepare for shooting parties without having to enter the territory of the staff or the main reception areas of the house. The service quarters of Pollok House are a fascinating insight into the work required to keep a country house operational. Built in around 1900, the basement rooms each reflect different aspects of the servants' duties. Now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, the house is open to the public.
