Scope and Content Library fireplace, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow This photograph shows the fireplace and overmantel at the south end of the library. It was designed to display the painting, 'The Lady in a Fur Wrap' (c.1577-9), one of a pair of works by El Greco that are hung in the library. Servants' bells can be seen on either side of the fireplace. The El Greco paintings are part of a larger collection held at the house. The 9th Baronet, Sir William Stirling Maxwell (1818-78), acquired most of his paintings prior to taking up residence at Pollok. He became an authority on the art and history of Spain, and the collection of paintings reflects this. The library of Pollok House was built in around 1905. It was designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson (1834-1921) for Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956). Sir John specified that the library should have room for 7,000 books.
