Scope and Content Drawing Room, Pollok House, Pollok Park, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow, from south-west The vibrant red walls in this room were decided upon by Sir John Stirling Maxwell (1867-1956) after seeing it at the Wallace Collection, London. The painting above the fireplace is a 16th-century copy of Titian's 'Christ Carrying the Cross'. Also of note are the electric lights, as the fitting dates from the early 20th century, when the entire house was wired for electricity. In 1936, a catalogue of the paintings at Pollok House recorded that there was a fire in the drawing room. A valuable painting by Sir Henry Raeburn (1756-1823) was lost, but the house still contains many fine masterpieces. Pollok House was built in the mid-18th century for the Maxwell family. The room shown in this photograph was originally the drawing room. At some point between 1890 and 1908, an organ, now removed, was inserted, creating a music room.
