Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Sullom Voe Seaplane Base, Shetland Islands Occupying the bay known as Garth's Voe, the seaplane base is clearly visible at the right hand side of this photograph and several aircraft can be seen at anchor out on the bay (2). On land, the base comprised two clusters of accommodation blocks (3) while two jetties (4) are also noted. Two anti-aircraft gun emplacements (flak) are shown at the base. Established in 1939, aircraft from Sullom Voe patrolled the waters between Shetland, Iceland and Norway, often flying anti-submarine missions. Such patrols were often hazardous: in 1944, a seaplane from Sullom Voe attacked a submarine with depth charges, but was itself badly hit by return fire from the submarine. The aircraft was badly damaged, and the pilot severely injured, his navigator killed, while the other crew members were also injured. On return to base, the pilot was found to have received 72 separate wounds. Taken during aerial reconnaissance in April 1940, this Luftwaffe intelligence photograph shows the Seaplane Base at Sullom Voe in the Shetland Islands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
