Scope and Content Gravestone of Isobel Smith, and Isobel and Jean Lindsay, St Vigeans Parish Church and Churchyard, Angus This gravestone features a large winged soul (symbol of the spirit ascending to Heaven after death) above a shield carved with initials, the date of 1730, and flaming heart. The heart between the initials symbolises eternal love, and indicates that the two people were married. Below a scroll can be seen a skull, hourglass and crossed bones, emblems of death and the brevity of life. Hearts between initials are often found carved on the lintels above doors in many Scottish towns and villages. These 'marriage lintels' find their parallel on gravestones with flaming hearts between the initials to signifying eternal love between two people, even after death. This gravestone commemorates Isobel smith, who died in 1729, and her children, Isobel and Jean Linsay. It is inscribed: 'In Memory of/Isobel Smith spouse to john/Lindsay in Ground of Latham/who died 22 October 1729/aged 65, their children/Isobel & Jean are interred/here, children Catherine,/William & Robert survive'.
