Scope and Content Bridge of Coe, Glen Coe, Highland This photograph, taken in 1969, illustrates the way in which the bridge was constructed, with rock outcrops providing the abutments from which the arch springs. It has been repaired, as some concrete is visible at the end of the parapet on the left. Military roads were built across Scotland during the 18th century. They linked places of strategic importance, thus helping the Government control the Highlands. The Bridge of Coe, in the village of Glencoe, was built in 1785 as part of a military road building programme. The bridge crosses the River Coe at the north-east end of the village's main street, which ran at right-angles to the military road. It was part of the route which led from Stirling to Fort William.
