Scope and Content Dundonald Castle, South Ayrshire, from west-south-west This view from the west-south-west, taken in 1985, shows the west face of the 14th-century keep of the castle, with the remains of the bases of two 13th-century round towers. The relative absence of windows can be explained by the presence of a hill to the west from which the castle could have been attacked. Excavation in advance of consolidation in the 1980s revealed the extent of the 12th-century work, which resembled that at Bothwell, with a twin-towered gatehouse to the east of the courtyard. Part of the Iron Age vitrified fort was also found. The castle was a favourite residence of the early Stewart kings. The rock on which Dundonald Castle is built was the site of an Iron Age hill fort which was abandoned not long before the first castle was built on the site, in the 13th century. The present building was adapted from part of the 13th-century structure in the later 14th century for King Robert II, the first Stewart king. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
