Scope and Content Aerial view of Dundonald Castle, South Ayrshire This view from the west-south-west, taken in 1984, shows the castle on its rocky mound, with the 14th-century keep in the centre, and the remains of the contemporary courtyard wall clearly visible. The rounded projections on the west face of the keep are remains of the 13th-century castle. Excavation in advance of consolidation in the 1980s revealed the extent of the 12th-century work, which resembled that at Bothwell, with a twin-towered gatehouse to the east of the courtyard. Part of the Iron Age vitrified fort was also found. The castle was a favourite residence of the early Stewart kings. The rock on which Dundonald Castle is built was the site of an Iron Age hill fort which was abandoned not long before the first castle was built on the site, in the 13th century. The present building was adapted from part of the 13th-century structure in the later 14th century for King Robert II, the first Stewart king. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
