Scope and Content Castle Campbell, Clackmannan, from south-west This view, from the south-west, taken in the early 20th century, shows the south range in front of the 15th-century tower-house, and the late 16th-/early 17th-century east range, to its right. The south range had the hall in its centre. In front of the south range are the overgrown garden terraces. Castle Campbell was a house of the Earls of Argyll, who developed it into a gracious residence, as well as a stronghold. It was apparently burned in 1654, but was partly repaired, and remained inhabited until at least the late 19th century. It was given into State care in 1948 and is now open to the public by Historic Scotland. Castle Campbell stands on a promontory between two burns, on the southern slopes of the Ochil Hills, which may have been the site of an earth and timber castle in the 12th century. The present stone castle was built in stages in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
