Scope and Content Aerial view of Craignethan Castle, South Lanarkshire This aerial view, taken from the north in 1995, shows the castle with the tower on the left, and its defensive ditch in the middle. On the left side of the ditch are the foundations of a massive defensive wall. The structures in the ditch were designed to allow gunfire to be directed against attackers trying to cross it. To the right of the ditch is the outer courtyard, probably intended primarily to give the artillery in the defensive wall a clear field of fire. The covered battery at the far end of the ditch is known as a 'caponier', and is the only one of its period in Scotland. Craignethan Castle was built in the 1530s by Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, as an artillery fortification, on a promontory surrounded on three sides by the River Nethan. It was taken in 1579 by forces of the Regent Moray, and the defences slighted. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
