Scope and Content Detail of statue, Glenfinnan Monument, Highland, from north-east Carved by John Greenshields, the statue is of a man in the clothing of a Highland chief, signified by his feathered bonnet. He is looking inland from Loch Shiel and is heavily armed, bearing a pistol, claymore and dirk. The statue was erected at a time when interest in Highland dress was high, having been made fashionable by Sir Walter Scott for the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822. The Glenfinnan Monument, situated at the head of Loch Shiel, was completed in 1815. It was designed by the architect James Gillespie Graham (1776-1855). The famous statue of a Highlander on its top was added in the 1830s, when a number of alterations were carried out on the monument. The monument is now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland.
