Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of a seaplane base at Oban, Argyll & Bute Nine seaplanes can be seen in this aerial photograph, moored in the bay near the station which comprises several buildings. These are described in the attached intelligence notes, being a variety of workshops, offices or accommodation buildings. The largest structure (annotated as 1) is described as being a 'shipyard' and may have been used for repairs as a seaplane is situated directly outside, ready for launching down the slipway (7). Originally established in 1937 as a refuelling base, the station quickly became an important base during the war for seaplanes. Here seaplanes were repaired and old aircraft dismantled, while squadrons assigned to Atlantic patrols were also based here. In 1941 a seaplane from Oban took President Roosevelt's European representative to Archangel to meet Joseph Stalin. The meeting was to obtain first-hand information for the American President about the state of Russia's war situation and their needs for munitions and supplies. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in 1940, this photograph shows a seaplane base at Kerrera Bay, near Oban. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
