Scope and Content Railway Station, Arisaig, Highland, from west-south-west This view from the west-south-west shows one of the two locomotives hauling a special steam excursion - the Jacobite - from Glasgow to Mallaig, on 1 June 1964, at the west end of the passing loop at Arisaig Station. The locomotives are both ex-North British Railway class J37 heavy goods locomotives. The day of the excursion was very warm, and by Arisaig the locomotives both had overheated bearings. They managed to struggle as far as Mallaig, but had to be replaced by a diesel-electric locomotive for the return journey. All four steam locomotives used on the tour failed in service. Arisaig is a station on the West Highland Extension Railway, from Banavie to Mallaig, opened in 1901, and constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons. The railway runs through rugged terrain, with steep gradients and sharp curves. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
