Scope and Content Train at Railway Station, Alloa, Clackmannan, from south This shows a railbus in the station on 27 January 1968, from the south, on a service from Larbert. The railbus is of a type built by Park Royal. The station had been rebuilt by the North British Railway in the late 19th century. It is in a cutting, with a covered footbridge linking it to the town. This photograph was taken on the last day of the service between Larbert and Alloa. Railbuses were tried by British Railways as a means of retaining services on lightly-used branch lines, but did not prove a lasting success. The concept was, however, revived with some success in the 1980s. The first station in Alloa was opened in 1850 by the Stirling & Dunfermline Railway. In 1851 it became a junction for a branch to Tillicoultry (extended to Kinross in 1865), and in 1885 for a line to Larbert built by the Caledonian Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
