Scope and Content Milk float, Midlock Street, Glasgow, from south-east This view from the south-east, taken in 1967, shows a milk float owned by Cuthbertson's Dairies Ltd, Govan, making household deliveries of milk in bottles in Midlock Street, Govan. Apart from the replacement of the original iron tyres by solid rubber ones the vehicle is entirely traditional. By the mid-1960s there were few horse-drawn vehicles left in Glasgow. Cuthbertson's were the last firm to make milk deliveries in this way, and there were a few rag and bone men and scrap dealers using them. Some whisky barrels were also being handled in this way. All have now gone. Until the mid-1950s horse-drawn vehicles were common in Glasgow, on services such as coal delivery, railway goods services, the movement of whisky in barrels, scrap dealing, and bread and milk delivery. Then a regulation was made excluding such vehicles from city centre roads, the beginning of the end. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
