Description General view from NNW showing harbour basin and piers

Date 5/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 796237

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Harbour, The Shore, Fortrose, Highland This view from the north-north-west, taken in May 1974, shows the L-plan pier on the right. The crane is a portable hand-operated one, probably of late 19th-century date, and the hut is a lookout post for the local yacht club. The breakwater is on the left. Despite its small size this harbour could accommodate the schooners and smacks that handled the trade of the North Sea at the time it was built. It was probably also used by fishing boats. Since 1974 it has become a yacht harbour, and the crane has been removed. This harbour was probably constructed in the early 19th century, to serve the market town of Fortrose, an ancient settlement. It consists of an L-plan pier on the west and south sides of a small basin, and a short breakwater on the east side, all built of sandstone masonry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
