Scope and Content Gunpowder Works Pier, Millhouse, Argyll & Bute This view from the south-west, taken in 1979, shows the pier which was built in 1856 for the steamer 'Sir Colin Campbell' which operated the service to Kames until 1928. The landward end of the pier is built of vertically-set masonry, as devised by James Bremner of Wick in the early 19th century. By 1979 the pier had been disused for many years, and the timber-piled head was seriously decayed. The masonry section was, however, still in remarkably good condition. The gunpowder works had its own pier a little distance to the south. Kames is a small settlement on the Kyles of Bute, towards the southern end of the Cowal peninsula. A gunpowder works was established there in 1839, and in 1856 it became the terminus of a commuter service, which allowed Glasgow businessmen to have marine villas there.
