Scope and Content Signal Box and Level Crossing, Blair Atholl Station, Perth & Kinross This view, taken in July 1981, shows the box from the north-east. It is of a standard Highland Railway type, of wooden construction. The wooden spars in the foreground form a grid to deter trespassing from the level crossing on to the railway track. This level crossing is well-used by visitors to Blair Atholl Mill, a working water-powered corn mill which is operated as a tourist attraction, so the box has been retained in use, while most of the others on the line have gone. This section of line is part of the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway, opened in 1863 between Forres and Birnam. Blair Atholl survived the closure of several of the wayside stations on this line in 1965. This signal box is at the south end of the station and controls a level crossing, as well as traffic through the station. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
