Scope and Content Railway Viaduct, White Cart Water, Pollokshaws Road, Glasgow This view taken in 1972 from the south, shows the two river spans, which are on a skew. The broad pier beyond takes up the angle of the skew, as the two land spans are not skewed. On the right, above the viaduct, is the signal box, which controlled Pollokshaws West passenger and goods stations. This railway was substantially engineered, but was initially of purely local interest, serving the textile settlements of Barrhead and Neilston. In 1873 it was extended to Kilmarnock by the Glasgow, Barrhead & Kilmarnock Direct Railway, to become part of a major Anglo-Scottish route. This four-span masonry viaduct was built for the Glasgow, Barrhead & Neilston Direct Railway in 1847-8 to designs by Neil Robson, engineer. It spans the White Cart Water and the east drive to Pollok House. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
