Scope and Content Train at Waverley Station, Edinburgh This shows the west end of the station from Regent Road, looking north-east, in September 1989, before the electrification of the East Coast Main Line, which was completed in 1991. The vehicle is a power car of a typical pre-electrification Edinburgh-Aberdeen train of the period. The train is a so-called 'High Speed Train', capable of a speed of 125 miles an hour (c.200km per hour), and introduced on the East Coast Main Line in 1977. There is a power car at each end of the train each developing 2,250 horsepower. Behind the train is the Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens. This station was opened in 1846 by the North British and Edinburgh & Glasgow Railways as a terminus. It was remodelled in the mid-1860s, and again in 1892-1902, to give increased capacity, on both occasions by the North British Railway. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
